Shift micro-operations are used in serial transfer data. They are also used in conjunction with arithmetic, logic and otehr data processing operations. The content of a register can be transfer in left or right direction. In Shift Left data of a flipflop transfer into rightmost flip-flop. And in Shift Right bit of a flip-flop is transfer into left most flipflop. The information transferred through a serial input determines the type of shift. There are three types of shifts. Arithmetic, Logical, Circular Shift.
